BEHAVIOR EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM |
| Not accepting students at this time | |
Location: |
Animal Behavior Consultations is located in the Kansas City metropolitan area at the Westwood Animal Hospital. Westwood Animal Hospital is a busy full service, veterinary practice with two doctors and a large support staff. We offer a full range of medical services, surgery, dentistry, boarding and training for all ages of pets. |
| Eligibility: | Applicants must be enrolled in a veterinary school program at the junior or senior level. |
| Application: | Interested students should send a short biography, a short statement concerning why they are interested in completing a behavior externship and a list of dates during which they are available. |
Length: |
Three to four weeks. Because of a variety of commitments, it is possible that Dr. Hunthausen may be called away from the hospital for a three to four day period during the externship. This usually does not interfere with the total number of behavior cases seen during the externship or reduce the number of lecture hours. During this time, the student is encouraged to be involved in the surgery and medical clinics. |
Program: |
During the externship, the students will become familiar with behavior modification techniques, behavior pharmacology, treatment protocol for common behavior problems and sources of information concerning companion animal behavior. They will learn how to work up behavior cases including: making the initial contact, taking a behavioral history, forming a prognosis, developing a treatment plan and making follow-up contacts. Emphasis will be placed on offering behavior services in the companion animal practice. Externs will receive a minimum of six hours of lecture material and will be allowed to attend consultations in a hospital setting and during housecalls. They will also be able to attend puppy temperament classes and obedience training at the hospital. As time permits, a behavior project may be assigned to the student to be completed during the externship. Students will also be encouraged to observe and participate in the medicine and surgery clinics at the hospital. |
Dress: |
