Hip Dysplasia
Canine hip dysplasia was first described in the late 1930's.  This debilitating joint disease afflicts millions of dogs each year and can result inflammation, lameness and very painful bone disease of the hip.  It costs owners millions of dollars in medical care, shortened work longevity, and reduced performance.  While it occurs most commonly in large and giant breed dogs, it can effect dogs of all breeds and sizes.  Factors influencing inheritance are complex and still being studied.  All large and giant breed dogs should have their hips evaluated by x-rays prior to breeding.  Affected dogs should not be bred.
