The Natural Solution to Control Cat Urine Marking, Scratching and Stress.
Cat Feline urine marking is a natural habit of both male and female cats. By spraying small quantities of urine on vertical surfaces, the cat provides a pheromonal indication of its presence to other cats.  Feliway is a product that provides a natural and comforting way to control cat urine marking. Feliway is an environmental spray containing synthetic analogues of naturally occurring facial pheromones. Studies have indicated that Feliway helps to control feline urine marking. Observations have indicated that cats do not leave urine marks on objects previously marked with facial pheromones.

CHARACTERISTICS OF URINE MARKING
Urine marking is characterized by very distinct behavioral patterns. After selecting a vertical support, the cat sniffs the support, kneads the ground and then turns it back to the support. With the tail held vertically, the cat sprays a horizontal jet of urine.

It is important to distinguish urine marking from other forms of house-soiling since treatment approaches differ. There are a number of other reasons why cats urinate outside the litter box, including:

  • Urinary tract Infection or crystalluria
  • Inadequate cleaning of the litter box
  • Unacceptable type of litter or litter box
  • Relocation of litter box to busy or new area
  • Anxiety / stress

TYPES OF MARKING
The two most common types of marking are:

  • Sexual - Male cats excited by the presence of a female in heat will leave urine marks on upright objects. Female marking is related to the onset of estrus.
  • Reactional - This type of behavior is often due to a change in the cat's environment - new furniture, moving to a new house, a visitor or new occupants. Aggression between cats may manifest itself as spraying by either the victim or the aggressor cat.

Urine marks are typically left by the cat at sites located between passageways and activity zones, such as corners of large protruding objects in the house.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
For best results, it is important to rule out possible medical problems and get a proper diagnosis of behavioral urine marking.

Urine marks should be cleaned with clear water only, as detergents and other cleansers may degrade the product. Feliway should then be sprayed directly onto urine mark spots - as well as onto nearby prominent objects including furniture, window frames and doorways. One depression of the nozzle should be applied approximately 4" from the site, 8" from the floor. Only one spray per application site is necessary. Urine marks and prominent objects should be treated one to two times daily for 30 days. If the cat is observed rubbing its own facial pheromones onto a spot, treatment at this location is no longer needed. Maintenance application every two to three days may be necessary in some situations. Cats demonstrating long-standing inter-cat aggression may need a behavioral modification program and concomitant drug therapy.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT SPRAY FELIWAY ON CATS.House Diagram
