The semiology of Communication patterns between dog and man

Introduction
Communication between dogs and people plays a fundamental role in the harmony or disharmony of their common social organization. Innately or culturally, people read or misread animal signals; this anthropocentrism leads to misunderstandings that shape the relationship.

The semiology of communication is one of the bases of the study of behaviours; without it one cannot consider any diagnosis or any behavioural therapy.

Fighting Fear
Dogs who are frightened of fireworks could be due a reprieve with the launch of a new behavioural product – the DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) diffuser.

The device replicates a signal of well being, which is similar to that generated by bitches and passed on to their nursing puppies. Apparently, DAP helps to alleviate fear and stress-related signs in puppies and adult dogs – which could be the key to helping dogs cope with the loud bangs of fireworks.

It has been reported that Daniel Mills, who runs a behaviour clinic at the University of Lincoln, carried out tests on a Labrador who was nervous of loud noises – and after five weeks the dog stopped hiding or jumping when fireworks went off.

A vet from Macclesfield also claims to have found a way to help dogs get over their fear of fireworks – by playing a CD of explosions, and increasing the volume daily to familiarise the dog with the sound.

However, the RSPCA says that the CD method should be considered very carefully, as it is not yet proven and pet owners should avoid putting their animals under undue stress.

For more information about DAP and whether it is suitable for your dog, contact your vet.

D.A.P.(Dog Appeasing Pheromone) (CEVA) Launched in France. Dedicated to the control of behavior disorders in dogs resulting from separation anxiety. Formulated from a dog pheromone naturally produced by the bitch in the intermammary groove from the third day of puppies' life.  When separation occurs, using DAP allows simulation of the effects of the natural pheromone and reduction of anxiety and the associated behavioral problems.  The electric diffuser allows constant administration of the product over about a month.
